whew! it has been a minute since i have shared a post. andrew and i had some days off of school and work so we traveled to minneapolis to spend easter with his family. it is always so nice to get away from out routines and be back in minnesota. his family also got a new puppy recently and i am obsessed! he is a goldendoodle named murphy and is the cutest little fluff. now we are back home and andrew is studying like crazy for finals. 1 more year of school… we can do this! ok now to today’s post!

easter is one of my favorite times of year to buy a new dress. it is so refreshing to wear floral or pastel after a long dreary winter. if you haven’t already gotten a dress, here are six beautiful picks all under $50! my personal favorites are number three and five but I would definitely wear all of them. ruffles are a big trend this season and easter may be a great time to give that style a try.

5 ways I stay fit and healthy

1. meal planning

you’ve heard that abs are made in the kitchen right? when I meal plan for the week it helps us to not eat out as often and also helps keep those pesky unhealthy foods from getting in my shopping cart {ice cream, chips, black and white trail mix} if any of those things end up in our house they get eaten way too fast and in way too big of serving sizes. I find if I can keep them at the store it helps us out a lot! Andrew and I do not eat perfectly. we try, but we often fail. sitting down and planning out meals that are healthy and sticking to our plan is what helps us be successful in our healthy eating.

2. walking

Andrew and I have a membership at our local YMCA. we try to go 2-3 times a week if we can. I am not a runner. I have some major knee issues {that my physical therapist husband is addressing} so I stick to walking. my goal every time I am on the treadmill is to walk a 5k {3.1 miles} at between 4.0-4.5 mph. when it is nice out we like to walk outside! I have calculated that from our apartment to the walmart parking lot and back is equivalent to a 5k and my goal is to accomplish that walk in 45 min or less! at the Y i like to watch some of my favorite shows while i walk {say yes to the dress, fixer upper} and it makes the time go by super fast. i sometimes even find myself staying longer than planned on the treadmill to finish the show. outside i find making an awesome upbeat playlist or listening to a podcast helps make working out more enjoyable.

3. barre fitness

this is my absolute favorite class to go to at the YMCA. it is a fun {and challenging} cardio and toning focused class that utilizes the barre for a variety of Ballet, Pilates, and Yoga exercises. this 55 minute class works your muscles to exhaustion so your legs and arms are literally shaking by the end of it! taking classes help me to push myself because even if i get tired i know i can’t just walk out of the class because if all these other ladies can last the whole time so can I. if you don’t have a gym membership I wrote about some of my favorite workouts that you can find on youtube in this post.

4. drink water

it is recommended to drink half your weight in oz. for instance, if you weigh 140 lbs you will want to drink 70 oz  of water a day. sometimes drinking water is the hardest thing to do. I have about a 25 oz water bottle so I force, and I mean force, myself to drink two full water bottles worth of water while I am at work. That gets me to just over 50 oz and then I will get the rest at home.

5. rest

I cannot stress enough how important it is to get your sleep. I realize sleep can be extra tough to come by if you are a mom, but you must try. generally 7 to 8 hours of sleep is what you should be getting. sometimes that is just impossible with your schedule, but other times it just means watching one less episode of your show or putting your phone away. when I set my alarm on my phone when I am ready for bed it lets me know exactly how much sleep I will get. this helps keep me accountable because when it says less than 6 hours i know i will be feeling it the next day.

following these steps is not easy. sometimes I really just want to lay on the couch and eat donuts!  when I do follow these steps though I notice a huge difference in my energy level and overall mood.  do you have any tips for staying fit and healthy?

my new favorite app

i just had to share with you this app that my husband and i recently discovered and love called Duolingo. Duolingo is an app that teaches you another language step by step. they offer over 20 languages to learn all for free!

my husband first downloaded this app because he will be going to Guatemala with his physical therapy class this summer. we both took Spanish in high school but struggle to form complete sentences.  he decided he wanted to learn as much Spanish as he could before he left so he can communicate easier with the people he will be working with.

my family on my mom’s side is Norwegian and we really embrace that part of our heritage. also, one of my friends that I met as a foreign exchange student in high school is Norwegian. I always feel so bad that whenever we talk she has to speak my language. So, i downloaded Duolingo and am starting to learn Norwegian! I don’t know if i will ever become fluent in Norwegian, but i would sure like to try.

Duolingo introduces new words gradually in each lesson. each lesson includes speaking, listening, translation, and multiple choice challenges to help you learn. you are also able to repeat lessons if you feel like you need more practice!

learning a second language as an adult can be a challenge. but with Duolingo i think it is possible! is there another language you would like to learn?

tips to get your best fix from stitch fix

if you have followed me for a while you know that I love Stitch Fix! I don’t get a box every month, but as the seasons change it is really fun to get a box of new things. there are times that I request specific items I’d like to see in my box and other times I give my stylist the freedom to surprise me with her picks. maybe you weren’t thrilled with your first fix or maybe you haven’t yet tried Stitch Fix but would like to. today i am sharing some great tips to help you get your best fix!

create a pinterest board

this is the #1 best tip I can give you. I have a board on pinterest called “stitch fix inspiration” that I share with my stylist. it gives her a visual of what my style is and what types of items I am looking for. Stitch Fix themselves pin items that are available to get in a fix so when I see something I like I make sure to pin it to my board! pinterest is where I get the most of my fashion inspiration so it just makes sense to share that with my stylist!

leave a note for your stylist

at the end of your style profile, you are able to leave a note for your stylist.  this note can include specific items you’d like to see in your fix, events that you have coming up that you would like items for, or even just more information about your style. one thing I am sure to include in that note is that I live in North Dakota. I wear sleeves 80% of the year so it is good for them to know that sending me a ton of sleeveless items is not very practical. in my last fix I mentioned that I was looking for something to wear for Easter. my stylist totally nailed it and sent me that adorable blush ruffle tank that I am planning to style with my white denim!

be extremely specific in your feedback

I think the more specific you are in your feedback, the more your stylist will understand your style. there are times when the style of a top is spot on, but the pattern is not my favorite. this way my stylist knows I like that style of shirt but would like it more in a different pattern or solid color. do not feel like you are being too picky. your stylist has never met you and this is a great way to help them pick items that are your style.

when you find a stylist you love, request them

when you receive your fix, they send you a style card with a personalized note from your stylist. if you receive a fix that is spot on, make sure to keep that card because you can request that same stylist to continue curating your fixes! isn’t it the best when somebody just “gets” your style?!

keep an open mind

one of my favorite things about Stitch Fix is the surprise factor every time I get my box.  it is so fun to have my fix delievered right to my door and see what my stylist has picked for me. there are times that my stylist picks out something I would never think to pick for myself but when I put it on I absolutely love it! they are the experts so trust them and have some fun!

one of the most popular trends I am seeing for spring is anything with vertical blue and white stripes. all of these pretty pieces are from a site called SheIn and are under $20! my personal favorite is number four. it has all of this seasons trends in one top {off the shoulder, stripes, bell sleeves} if you have never browsed SheIn’s website I would really suggest doing so! everything is so inexpensive and I have been really happy with the items I have purchased through them. of course buying anything online {especially clothing} can be difficult, but returns are an absolute breeze! what do you think of this trend?

this weekend we are planning to just lay low since last weekend was so busy. it is supposed to be in the 50s this weekend and throughout next week! so excited to not have to wear my parka! however, I can’t put it away just yet because lets be real it could be super sunny and nice one week and frigid with a  blizzard the next. oh north dakota…
