herbal essenses: bio renew

IMG_20170916_123744_302

Influenster sent me their Herbal Essences Voxbox to give their shampoo and conditioner a try. i was a little hesitant because i have used Herbal Essences in the past and did not like it! i felt like the shampoo and conditioner left a film on my hair and their hairspray left “flakes” after it dried. however, being a cosmetologist, i love giving new products a try so i thought i would give Herbal Essences a second chance.

Pros:

-this shampoo and conditioner smells SO good. scent is something herbal essences has always been good at!

-it is paraben and silicone free which means there is no film left on my hair.

-it is safe for color treated hair!

Cons:

-i didn’t feel like the shampoo and conditioner was as moisturizing as i would like.  it doesn’t suck all the moisture out by any means, but i think it could be better!

they also sent me their volume dry shampoo. i haven’t had too much luck with dry shampoos and was very impressed with the one they sent! it truly made my hair feel fresh and gave it a lot of volume. i suggest using the dry shampoo at night and letting it absorb all the oils while you sleep. {if you have any questions about how to apply dry shampoo let me know!} the only con with the dry shampoo is that it is white. i am a brunette so when i spray this on my hair my hair turns gray! once it absorbs the gray goes away so if you are brunette i definitely suggest using it at night.

do you have a favorite shampoo, conditioner or dry shampoo? let me know in the comments!

fall with warby parker

Warby Parker launched their new Fall Line today and it is amazing! they always have such fun and unique frames and i am so excited to help announce the launch of their new line!
the color palette for this line was inspired by leather bound books at a college library. i personally love any kind of tortoise pattern and think it is so fun that they paired it with a color on the temples. that baltic blue screams fall doesn’t it?

below, i picked out my four favorite styles from their new collection but make sure to head to their website to see all of the eyeglass options as well as various sunglass styles they have to offer!

as much as i am ready for all things fall, it has still been pretty hot out so i thought i would share one more summer outfit with you! this embroidered top from Stitch Fix
has been on repeat ever since i got it in my last box. i generally go for neutral colors in my closet but i love the pop of color in this top. there were a few similar tops and dresses i had pinned on my stitch fix inspiration board on Pinterest and am so happy my sytlist saw those and sent me this top! i had meant to post this look weeks ago but i had a little mishap and i wasn’t sure if i would be able to even show it at all! here’s the story:

so my sweet husband did the laundry for me and accidentally shrunk this shirt. like it looked like a preschooler could have worn it. it was so short! i was super sad because i had just gotten it and hadn’t seen anything similar in local stores. i looked at the tag and it said the shirt was made of 100% rayon. anything made of rayon is notorious for shrinking and i really should have known better before i just threw it in the basket. i decided to search google for any hope of ‘unshrinking’ my new top and guess what? i was able to make it good as new!

my secret formula:

mix 1 tablespoon of hair conditioner into 4 cups of warm water. soak garment for 10 minutes. wring it out, lay flat and gently stretch in every way. stretch the garment a few more times as it dries.

i was so relieved that it worked and that the little laundry mistake didn’t completely ruin my new shirt. if you ever find yourself if that situation make sure you give this trick a try. i am so glad i did!

ask a stylist: your stitch fix questions answered

hello lovelies! as you know, i have been a Stitch Fix customer for quite some time. I love getting my box of hand selected goodies and sharing my stylist’s picks with you here on Those Pretty Pieces. recently I had the opportunity to ask one of Stitch Fix’s
lovely stylists, Talleda, a few questions about her experience as a stylist.

Stitch-Fix-Stylist-Talleda-R

What do you love most about being a Stitch Fix Stylist?

The relationships I have with my Clients are the most special thing to me about styling. We get to follow along with our Client’s through college graduations, new jobs, weddings, moves, births of their children – it’s amazing. I have Clients whose ages range from 15 to 75 and I love that no day is the same and no Fix is the same. When you really nail a Fix and your Client’s let you know you have impacted their life or helped make them feel more confident, that is the best kind of job perk.

What is the most helpful to you when styling a client? Style profile? Pinterest board? Previous feedback?

You already knew where I was headed! Yes, yes and yes. All of it helps immensely! Feedback is so incredibly helpful, especially when you fill me in on fit and style details. Letting me know if an item is fitting too long in the sleeves or tight in the thighs helps me understand your body type better and find pieces that are really personalized for you.

Do you style for women, men, maternity and plus or just one?

I am honored and privileged to style women, men, maternity, plus, petite and non-gender clients! How lucky am I?! However, some of our stylists style only women’s, it really varies. Some of our expert stylists are also on our Ask A Stylist team, and if you haven’t ever asked us a question, you should! We give free expert style advice (if I do say so myself), even if our readers are not clients of ours. Men can get in on the action as well!

– Talleda R.

thank you so much Talleda for taking the time to answer some questions for us! it is so fun to hear a little bit from ‘behind the scenes.’ did you know that Stitch Fix hires stylists in some major cities including minneapolis? hello dream job!

alaska travel guide

last week, my brother and i took a trip to Alaska! my sister and her husband moved there about a year ago and we were so excited to finally be able to go visit. it was pretty chilly and rainy for most of our trip but everything was still so beautiful. in case you are planning a trip to Alaska in the future i thought i would put together a guide of things to do while you’re there!

portage glacier cruise {~1 hour from anchorage}

this was my favorite thing we did on our trip. the weather cleared up so it was a perfect day to be out on the water. they do 5 tours a day from may 17-sept 18. the tour is very affordable and definitely worth it. for more information click here.

ride in a float plane {in anchorage}

my brother and I took a flight tour with Rust’s Flying Service. we spent most of our time flying over the cook inlet and searching for wildlife. we were able to see beluga whales, seals, bears and moose! it was such a cool experience!

they offer multiple different flightseeing tours that range from $100-$500. {note: some tours are only offered in the summer!}

hike to waterfalls

this was the first hike we did to thunderbird falls. if you look closely you can see some people closer to the falls which shows just how massive the falls are!

20170813_155201

this is barbara falls. at the beginning of the trail there was a sign posted saying that there had been a brown bear attack there only 10 days before! needless to say i was terrified the entire hike but thankfully we did not have any bear encounters and the view was worth it.

drive down the coast

driving from anchorage down the seward highway was incredibly beautiful. this photo is at beluga point. beluga whales are often seen from mid-july until august in this area.

20170815_170708

visit local attractions

the town my sister and her husband live in is the headquarters of the iditarod! there is a museum and gift shop and we also saw these cute 2 week old puppies!

20170814_110130

20170814_111316

south of anchorage there is a wildlife conservation center that we visited!

20170815_151028

20170815_160802

we also stumbled upon a place near Talkeetna, AK that produces Birch Syrup. i had no idea that you could tap a Birch tree but they have this syrup all over Alaska. i think i will be sticking to the classic maple syrup, but it was fun little stop.

our trip was short, but we were able to do and see so much! there are a ton of different things to do in Alaska it really just depends on what you’re interested in. if you’re thinking about going, do it!
