crushin’ on |4|

pineapple, cami, vest

i can’t believe it is already going to be MAY tomorrow! this spring has flown by but i am super excited to be one month closer to summer. here are the latest things I’ve been crushin’ on!

bismarck opened their second caribou coffee & einstein bagel shop. it is up closer to where we live so obviously i am thrilled! since the weather is warming up, my current drink of choice is the iced berry white mocha. it is SO good and it is pink which, to me, looks like summer in a cup.

pineapples are everywhere right now and i am obsessed. this pinepple candle is from target and comes in a super cute coral color as well. i also just bought this shirt. other pineapple things i have my eye on are this rug,  this kitchen towel, and this phone case. {too bad im stuck in the olden days and still have my iphone 4s…}

let me just say that every blogger ever currently has this cami and i can totally see how essential it is for the spring and summer. i just can’t justify spending $30 on a cami. so if y’all come across something similar that is more affordable let me know!!

i ordered this vest last friday when target had 40% off their merona brand. i am super excited to get it! i have a green cargo jacket that i pretty much lived in this fall so i figured i would get a ton of use out of the vest version as well. i’ll let you know what i think when it arrives. {*update* TARGET CANCELLED MY ORDER!  sorry to yell but I am so disappointed. apparently it became unavailable right after I ordered it. I love target but seriously I’m peeved…}

kransekake

andrew and i recently celebrated our first anniversary! looking to that day i was bummed to think that we didn’t save any of our wedding cake. {ugh! who forgets to do that?} we had a traditional Norwegian cake {kransekake} for our wedding which is not very common to find in a normal bakery. although i was able to find a bakery in fargo that would make it for our wedding {thank you Nichole’s Fine Pastry}, i simply could not find any place in Bismarck that would! so what did i do? attempted to make it myself!

the traditional recipe calls for 1 pound of almonds blanched and ground. {seriously ain’t nobody got time for that} so instead i found a recipe that used almond paste which i was able to find at our local supermarket.

typically, kransekake is made with ring forms but you can also form them by hand!

here was my final result!

it definitely isn’t perfect {i should really work on my icing skills..} but it was so fun to have it for our anniversary! I’m thinking i might buy myself the ring forms and make this every year for our anniversary. one of the traditions with this cake is for the bride and groom to lift the top layer of the cake at their wedding. the number of cake rings that stick to the top one when they lift it is said to be the number of children the couple will have. we forgot to do this at our wedding so decided to try it and had 3 of the rings stick together. i guess time will tell if that is accurate 🙂

best bread ever.

photo

often when we have guests at our house i like to take the opportunity to try out a new recipe. it may not be the best idea especially if you are prone to ‘pinterest fails’ like i am. however, this recipe turned out perfectly and you have to try it!

cinnamon swirl chocolate chip bread

to make the cinnamon swirl:

1/3 cup of sugar

1 Tbs cinnamon

mix together in a bowl and set aside.

to make the bread:

1 egg

3/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup sugar

1 cup buttermilk (diy buttermilk: 1 Tbs lemon juice and milk to make 1 cup. mix and let stand for 5 minutes)

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 tsp vanilla

2 cups of flour

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

2/3 cup chocolate chips (mini or regular)

mix the bread ingredients together. {some people are picky with mixing wet and dry ingredients in separate bowls and ‘folding’ them together. i’m lazy and just throw it all into my kitchen aid making sure not to over mix.}

preheat your oven to 350 and spray a 9X5 loaf pan. pour half of the batter into the pan and sprinkle with cinnamon swirl mixture until covered {leaving enough to sprinkle on the top} pour the remaining batter and top with the cinnamon mixture. cover with foil and bake for an hour!

hope you enjoy this recipe as much as my husband and I do!

stitch fix

after doing TRENDSEND by evereve {see post here} i decided to give stitch fix a try! the concept is pretty much the same; you fill out a style profile online, pay a styling fee, and have hand picked items sent to your door. the only difference {which is a very small difference} is that stitch fix sends you 5 items vs. 3 outfits like you get in the other box. they also give you 25% off if you keep everything in your box!

each stitch fix box comes with this ‘style guide’ to help you pair the items with things already in your closet!

20160121_180315
this black vest was the first thing I tried on from my box. it is very cute, but i already own an identical vest.

20160121_193324
the next item in my box was this pair of black leggings. it is impossible to see, but they have a ribbed texture and are fleece lined! although they are nice and warm for this climate I just am NOT a leggings person. however, i think they would make good lounge wear.

20160121_190901

my work has a pretty strict dress code where we can only wear certain colors. I always tell my stylist this because it is just easier to buy things in only those colors so i can wear them any day of the week. i was so impressed they had this color block sweater in all work approved colors! i styled it pretty casual, but i think it would be so cute with chambray top layered underneath, a pearl necklace, and some pumps!

20160121_192633

how cute is this top? i love the two different fabrics. in this picture the body of the shirt seems purple but i swear it is gray!

20160121_191843
this scarf also came in my box. i had never seen a scarf like this and just fell in love. I’ve had a slight obsession with blanket scarves this season!

20160121_192259

overall it seemed like the stylist knew my style pretty well. so much so she gave me things already in my closet! as the cold weather is {hopefully} coming to an end i am so excited to try stitch fix again for some spring styles!

{Q & A}

where do you live?

andrew and i moved to bismarck, nd in june 2015 so he could start grad school for physical therapy. before that we lived in fargo, nd but i am originally from alexandria, mn.

what made you want to start a blog?

i have a huge love for fashion and beauty products. i started following blogs my freshman year of college starting with ‘the small things blog.’ {which i found on pinterest}  i saw how fun it was for these bloggers to share their new outfits, product reviews, and other lifestyle posts. because andrew would be spending most of his time studying,  i thought starting a blog would be a good way for me to share my creative side and fill my down time. i have learned a lot and it is still a work in progress but i am so excited to have you all following along!

who takes your photos?

my husband! the majority of the time my blog has been up and running it has been winter. because of that most of my pictures have the same background in a corner of our apartment. i am hoping to get more adventurous and improve that aspect of my blog. {bare with me!}

do you work in a salon?

i received my cosmetology license in july 2013. i have actually never used my license or worked in a salon. i am so glad i went to cosmetology school and it was an awesome experience. i will have those skills forever and i know my family will benefit from it. however, i saw it more as a hobby and not a passion for a career. will i ever work in a salon? maybe. but as of right now it is not in the plan.

where are your favorite places to shop?

i really enjoy shopping but also like to get a good deal. old navy and target are my go to stores. their price point is very reasonable and I’ve been happy with the quality as well. when i lived in fargo i did a lot of shopping at forever 21. i still get most of my basics there but that is about it. i have found myself looking at nordstrom, nordstrom rack, and j crew factory’s websites more recently too!

what would you consider to be 5 wardrobe essentials in your closet?

chambray shirt, a good pair of dark wash skinnies, green cargo jacket {they have this in vest form at target right now and i’m thinking i need it for this summer!}, comfortable wedges, fun print dress

what are some of your hobbies…besides shopping?

in the winter, i love to knit! i mostly knit scarves but have made hats and baby blankets as well. i play the piano and also sing on the worship team at our church. i’ve been going to a barre fitness class at our local ymca and LOVE it! i think i have to consider coffee as one of my hobbies. i love making new drinks at home and going on coffee dates with friends!
