dress for your body type:i am the straight shape

new week, new body type! if you missed the last two posts in the series you can find them here-> {apple shape, pear shape}

for this shape your bust and hips are no more than 9 inches wider than your waist. if this is you, the goal is to create some curves!

off the shoulder tops {which are super popular this season} will lengthen your shoulders and create an illusion of a small waist

peplum tops will create curves at the hips

small keyhole in front will make your bust appear fuller

tops with collars, ruffles or any type of embellishment at the neckline or on the sleeves

*avoid vertical stripes as they will discourage the appearance of curves*

form fitting pencil skirts will accentuate any curves you have

bottoms with pleats will make your lower half fuller {in a good way!}

skinny jeans will bring out curves in your hips

boyfriend jeans look best on this body type

*avoid large flare jeans as they will throw off your proportions*

this shape can rock the shift dress!

shirt dresses with their collars, button down and tie waist are perfect

dresses with sweetheart necklines

one of my favorite bloggers {alyson haley from sequins and things} considers herself to have a straight body shape. she is so good at giving herself the illusion of curves on her petite body! if this is your body shape follow her for inspiration!

hope this helps bring out your feminine curves!

dress for your body type: i am an apple

welcome back to the ‘dress for your body type’ series! if you missed last weeks post on the pear shape find you can find it here!

today we are dressing the apple shape! for this body type, you are fuller around your middle and bust. the goal will be to create a defined waist and long lines. {don’t know your body type? use this calculator to find out!}

empire waist will cinch you in at your smallest part {typically under your bust} and flow nicely over your midsection

v neck tops or other neckline embellishments help bring the focus above your midsection

patterned tops can help camouflage your tummy

*avoid slim fitting tops that will cling to problem areas*

*avoid baggy tops! there are always ways to enhance your figure don’t cover yourself up!*

relaxed fit with embellishments and back pockets. these embellishments will help give your back end some nice shape.

knee length {or longer} a line skirts help to give you a defined waist and keeping the length at or below your knee will slim you out and give you those long lines

bootcut jeans will balance make your bottom half proportionate to your top half

*look for pants with zippers on the sides. this will help you avoid anything extra near your midsection {such as buttons or pleats}*

dresses with an elevated waistline such as an empire waist or a line will give you a defined waist where you are the smallest and flow over your midsection in a flattering way

wrap dresses will give you a defined waist and the ruching detail will hide any problem areas

hope these tips help you be confident and comfortable in your body!

dress for your body type: i am pear shaped

welcome to my new series ‘dress for your body type.’ in the next few weeks i will be going through the different body types and helping you determine what pretty pieces would be the most flattering on you. i’m starting with my body shape: pear! this means that my hips are more than 10 inches wider than my waist and my bust is not significantly wider than my waist. {bust: 33in, waist: 26 in, hips: 38 in} find your shape using this calculator.

for this body type, the goal is to balance your proportions. we want to emphasize your top half while slimming you bottom half.

horizontal stripes and v neck or u neck tops will help broaden your shoulders to balance out your hips

embellishments at your neck or shoulders help bring the focus upward

tops that cinch at the waist will give you beautiful lines

*avoid dropped waist or shapeless tops*

A line skirts accentuate your tiny waist while trimming your hips

dark wash jeans will slim your hips and a straight cut will accentuate your curves just the right amount

*avoid embellishments on your jean pockets as this will draw attention to your lower half*

*avoid capri pants. these will make your legs appear shorter making you seem bottom heavy*

wrap dresses hide any problem areas and bring out your curves

fit and flare dresses show off your small waist

heels will make you appear taller and slimmer

hope these tips help you dress your already beautiful body! what body type should i dress next?

chalk paint

painting furniture with chalk paint has become very popular in the DIY world.  i have seen people use it on all kinds of projects from small ones, such as painting the legs of dining room chairs, all the way to kitchen cabinets. in our years of college Andrew and i always had roommates so when we got married we realized that we didn’t own very much to furnish our apartment. our side tables next to our bed were black and we also had a huge dresser in a very light wood color. it didn’t look good at all. after browsing on pinterest i decided to give chalk paint a try. the best part: no need to prep the surface!

chalk paint

i used this paint in the color elephant and this wax. you can find it at your local walmart in the craft section. {for reference, i used 2 bottles of paint and 1 bottle of wax for my project}

when you live in a small apartment with no garage your kitchen becomes a craft room. i also forgot to snap a before picture but you can see the original wood color in this photo!

i would say the most important part of this project was the wax. it seals the paint in and prevents it from chipping or rubbing off. i used strips of a cotton t shirt to apply the wax.

Here is the finished product!

using chalk paint was such an easy and inexpensive way to give our dresser a new look! this paint worked great for my project however, if you are using chalk paint on something with more value {like your kitchen cabinets} i would suggest using a higher quality paint such as Annie Sloan. hope this gives you some inspiration for an easy project!

stitch fix no. 2

this week i got my second stitch fix box! i had asked for some fun spring styles and they delivered. a new trend i am loving is the off the shoulder top! i was super excited when they sent me this top to try!

next was this adorable animal print romper. i paired it with this gold necklace they sent me! it even had pockets y’all.

{sorry for blinding you with my legs. haven’t seen the sun in a few months!}

the back of this tank is amazing. i love the all details!

this comfy and casual dress was next. {the wind was not in my favor during these shots}

what did you think of my fix? it is always so fun to open up my box and see hand  picked items just for me. have you tried it yet? you know you want to! click here to schedule you’re first fix!

mothers day gift guide

mother’s day is coming up this sunday! if any of you are procrastinators {like me} it is probably too late to order anything so here is a quick gift guide to help you out!

bath and body works currently has all of their 3 wick candles 2 for $24! I love their candles. they have such a variety of scents and last a long time. pick up one of these cute candle sleeves to go with it! this pineapple one is adorable! if candles aren’t her thing, my mom is a big fan of their foam soaps which are on sale 4 for $20 or 6 for $24.

pajamas might be a little difficult but with the seasons changing it is a great time to find mom some cool sleepwear. Gilligan & O’Malley from Target will forever be my favorite brand for sleepwear. these and these are perfect and on sale for $15!

you literally can never go wrong with flowers whether that be fresh cut in a vase or ones to plant. I have seen some gorgeous hanging planters around! check out this one from Lowes.

gift cards for coffee, a massage, or a pedicure! I like to get my mom a gift card for something we can do together. her love language is quality time so anything that I can do WITH her means a lot to her.

mother’s day is such a wonderful holiday to celebrate the woman who gave you life! my mom is my best friend and I love having a specific day to spoil her more than usual. however,  I know it can also be a hard day for some. some of you have recently lost your mom. some of you are struggling with infertility or had a miscarriage. I have friends in all of these situations and want to remember to be sensitive as this can be hard day.

i hope this gift guide is helpful for you! here’s a picture of my beautiful mom and me!
